EUROCLIO was founded in 1993 as a response to an initiative of the Council of Europe and the changing political climate in Europe. Currently, EUROCLIO supports a network of at least 40.000 history educators and has more than 60 History Educators’ Associations as member organisations including the Verband der Geschichtslehrer Deutschlands e. On February 1st the New EUROCLIO Website has been launched. This website will offer new possibilities to its Members and Partners Organization. The website gives an overview of past and present activities. The website is a rich source of information and contains many resources for history educators. The New Website features a section with daily updated news and events related to history education taking place around the world. Visitors will have the option to comment on the news items and engage in debates and discussions on the forum.
Nijmegen, The Netherlands - EUROCLIO 17th Annual Conference 2010
The preparations for the 17th Annual EUROCLIO Training Conference under the title “Exploring Common European History, Which Themes do we Teach in Different Dimensions and Levels” are moving along and all Dutch key players in the discourses about the learning and teaching of history have accepted to contribute to the event, which is to be held from March 22-28, 2009. The University of Nijmegen has offered to host the openings day of the Conference, and several organizations have already offered sponsorship. In the coming months the Conference Committee will concentrate on further fine tuning of the programme, the questionnaire and seek for further financial support.
Die hier vorgestellte Fortbildung wird sich vor allem mit gemeinsamen Themen europäischer Geschichte beschäftigen und vereint die wichtigsten Autoren der Niederlande zu diesem Thema.
Bridging Histories in Bosnia Herzegovina
The project, support by SOROS Open Society Institute Bosnia addresses current practical needs of History Educators in the region and continues the work carried out in previous EUROCLIO Projects conducted with local member organisations. This project will continue to train history educators in the country on a regional level. The local experts and authors also aim to conduct a thorough assessment of recent history curricula guidelines developed by the Ministry of Education and come forth with Recommendations for implementing them in curricula that are modern, inclusive, diverse and focus on delivering skills as much as facts.
Diese Arbeitsgruppe bemüht sich um Aspekte der Völkerverständigung in Bosnien-Herzegowina. Konkret sollen Geschichtslehrkräfte dieser Region fortgebildet werden, um diesen Ansatz auch im Unterricht zu bestärken. Im Übrigen werden Empfehlungen für dortige Lehrpläne erarbeitet.
European Dialogues, a Cultural Rainbow for the future of Learning and Teaching History in Bulgaria.
The EUROCLIO/MATRA project in Bulgaria has its focus on school history and would like to develop an increased intercultural and also international dimension in the learning and teaching of history in this country. Among the aims of the EUROCLIO/MATRA Project is the publication of a coherent “Teaching Box” with 30 to 40 lesson plans for use in Secondary History Education in Bulgaria. The Editing Team composed of competent Bulgarian History Educators, headed by Professor Vaselin Yanchev and by Moscow History Education Expert Ms Tamara Eidelman, had their Final Meeting in The Hague at EUROCLIO Headquarters in November 2008.
Auch in dieser Arbeitsgruppe soll der multiperspektivische, bzw. internationale Ansatz im Geschichtsunterricht, diesmal in Bulgarien, durch die Entwicklung entsprechenden Unterrichtsmaterialien bestärkt werden.
Tolerance Building through Education in Georgia. How to Teach History and Citizenship in a Multicultural and Multiconfessional Environment.
In November 2008, the EUROCLIO/GAHE project was launched in Tsavkisi, near Tbilisi in Georgia. The seminar was attended by 64 participants. Among the aims of the meeting were the identification of challenges for innovative approaches in Georgian school history and discussion about the effectiveness of the present Georgian history curriculum in building tolerance in a multi ethnic and multi religious environment.
The first Project Workshop for coordinators, authors, experts and resource person within the EUROCLIO/MATRA project is scheduled from Friday 6th February till Sunday 8th February 2009 and aims to share information about the current situation regarding inclusion and diversity in present social studies and history school textbooks and to agree to common understandings of teaching tolerance and diversity through the learning and teaching of history.
Past - the Future of Europe, Windows to Europe’s History and Heritage
The EUROCLIO Secretariat office in The Hague hosted on 7 and 8 November 2008 the first meeting of the Steering Committee of the new project “Past - the Future of Europe, Windows to Europe’s History and Heritage”. This project envisages the creation of online, interactive multimedia tool for key themes in Europe’s recent past and heritage, addressing a plurality of perspectives and inter- and intra-state diversity for school history and heritage education in Europe. This project is carried out by the Netherlands Institute for Heritage in cooperation with EUROCLIO and we are happy to notice the interest from several partners, such as EUROPEANA, the digital library, museum and archive; Europa Nostra – the Pan European Federation of Heritage Institutions; NE-MO, the Network of European Museum Organisations; the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research; and the Digital Film Center EU.
Diese Arbeitsgruppe befasst sich mit der Entwicklung multimedialer Arbeitsmittel, die sich für grundlegende Themen der europäischen Geschichte eignen.
Online Students Seminar: Teaching Controversial History
Following up on the Forum Discussion organized last year, History Education Students from the University of West England, and the University of Iceland, will be actively engaged on the EUROCLIO Forum, to explore research and scholarly writing on the teaching of controversial issues in history. This will also give them the extraordinary opportunity to discuss these issues with students form other each other’s countries. Also Teacher Trainers from The Netherlands, and South Africa will stimulate their students to join the debates and discussion, however for them it will not be mandatory assignments.
